Celebrating its 20 year anniversary, Vilnius International Theatre Festival \u201cSirenos\u201d from the very beginning was seeking the exchange between Lithuanian and foreign theatres by not only bringing progressive modern theatre to Lithuania, but also by inviting foreign theatre professionals to explore Lithuanian theatre panorama. This year Lithuanian theatre showcase will present 10 latest season productions, selected by the producer Ana Ablamonova. In reference to a topic called \u201cWord\u201d, set by the foreign festival programme, the curator has put together a programme, the concept of which can be described by one key word \u2013 contexts. In order to extend those contexts, the showcase programme was additionally enriched by events of various formats. Lithuanian theatre showcase will take place from 20 to 24 of September in Vilnius, \u0160iauliai, Klaip\u0117da and… Pravieni\u0161k\u0117s.<\/span><\/p>\n

Organizers of the festival are seeking that \u201cSirenos\u201d Lithuanian programme would not only be a platform for foreign curators to look for interesting artists and productions, but also a celebration for theatre community and a distinctive quality label, allowing Lithuanian audience to discover new unexpected productions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Every year the showcase is attended by 50\u201360 guests from abroad \u2013 theatre and festival schedulers, curators, directors, theatre critics, academics, artists. \u201cSirenos\u201d usually welcomes guests from neighbouring countries, but foreign performing arts experts from afar also visit the festival. Connections made during \u201cSirenos\u201d promote Lithuanian theatre tours abroad \u2013 after last year\u2019s showcase the production \u201cUncle Vania\u201d (directed by Tomi Jane\u017ei\u010d) by the State Small Theatre of Vilnius was not only awarded by the committee, but also invited to a prestigious and one of the most important European theatre festivals \u2013 Wiener Festwochen (Austria).<\/span><\/p>\n

International jury and \u201cSirenos\u201d awards<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Anniversary showcase programme includes three jury awards \u2013 for a production, a person and a creative team. The prize itself is a musical instrument theremin, that produces sounds, perfectly matching the whole Siren-like vibe. When announcing the decision, the committee will specify what is this particular award for. Also, the jury will share their impressions of the whole Lithuanian theatre showcase programme. Jury\u2019s verdict is an extremely important part of the showcase, allowing to understand how Lithuanian theatre productions are perceived in an international context and identifying what artists and creative pursuits are more valued by foreign specialists, rather than our own critics and spectators.<\/span><\/p>\n

Members of this year\u2019s jury \u2013 festival \u201cFast Forward\u201d curator Charlotte Orti von Havranek (Germany), Polish director \u0141ukasz Twarkowski, familiar to Lithuanian audience because of his works \u201cLokis\u201d and \u201cRespublika\u201d. Ewa Zembok \u2013 curator of the festival \u201cKutna Hora Performing Arts\u201d and the founder of the\u00a0 <\/span>Divadlo X10 theatre (Czech Republic), cultural producer and director, curator of the performing arts at the French organization ONDA (Office national de diffusion artistique) Geoliane Arab (Lebanon) and Hyde Hytti \u2013 the executive producer of international projects at TINFO \u2013 Theatre Info Finland.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prizes will be awarded not only by the international jury, but also by the spectators, who will be able to vote for the most audience-appealing<\/i> production on the website of \u201cSirenos\u201d partner LRT. What does the foreign jury appreciate most in the showcase? Which production did the audience like best? A chargeless open \u201cSirenos\u201d award ceremony will take place at 9 p.m. on September 24 at the \u201cOpera Social House\u201d club.<\/span><\/p>\n

Programme by the curator Ana Ablamonova<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

To participate in \u201cSirenos\u201d Lithuanian theatre showcase the play has had to be staged in Lithuania during the last season \u2013 i.e. the nationality or the citizenship of the creator doesn\u2019t matter, what matters is the location where premiere took place and the producer. The number of the selected productions is limited by an independent curator or a duet of curators. The same goes for making up the programme.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2021 the showcase was curated by theatrologists Rimgail\u0117 Renevyt\u0117 and Ieva Tumanovi\u010di\u016bt\u0117, in 2022 \u2013 by theatrologists Vlada Kalpokait\u0117 and Ramun\u0117 Balevi\u010di\u016bt\u0117. This year the programme was put together by the producer and founder of \u201cOperomanija\u201d Ana Ablamonova, mainly working with interdisciplinary and modern opera productions.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFor many of our local artists Lithuanian theatre showcase of Vilnius International Theatre Festival \u201cSirenos\u201d has always been a main or at least an auxiliary gateway to an international market. The programme of the Lithuanian theatre showcase, representing theatre season of 2022\u20132023, was put together, bearing in mind this crucial function of the showcase, shaped by many years of festival experience. Target spectator of this programme is a supposed curator from abroad, coming to \u201cSirenos\u201d from Central or Western Europe and looking for unique authentic content, unusual artistic language, uncanny topics and experiences and intriguing cultural contexts, that can be presented in the programmes of the festivals he or she is curating.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

Lately, international programme of \u201cSirenos\u201d has been compiled according to a topic, that has to be different each year. This criteria does not apply to Lithuanian theatre showcase. Although we didn\u2019t want to get too far from this year\u2019s topic \u201cWord\u201d and to find something in common with the content of Lithuanian theatre showcase. So, we move from \u201cwords\u201d and \u201ctexts\u201d they create to \u201ccontexts\u201d \u2013 a deeper perception, most of this year\u2019s showcase productions require a more thorough presentation. These are the contexts of a country\u2019s culture, traditions, historical experiences, modern society problems or even wider contexts of classical literature. So, because of that, in order to broaden the field of experiences of a supposed target spectator, to reveal and introduce various contexts, theatre programme is enwrapped in a coat of additional events of various formats.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

Found Found Found \u00a9Eimantas Paulauskas<\/p><\/div>\n

With this humble selection of productions at Lithuanian theatre showcase, consisting of more than 70 plays I attended all over Lithuania, I\u2019d like to reveal the main tendencies of development of Lithuanian theatre, modern trends, defining potential strategies of future collaborations. In my opinion, during the last season, the stronger and more active (physical, as well as political) positions were projected by artists of a new generation (especially women), significant role was played by visiting foreign directors (mostly middle-aged or older men). Meanwhile, big names of the older generation of Lithuanian theatre (basically just men) began reinterpreting their previous works or, as highly precious artefacts, entered the museum spaces (and here it\u2019s worth mentioning not only the transfer of \u201cMeno fortas\u201d into LTMCM, but also an exhibition called \u201cVilnius poker\u201d by <\/i><\/span>Oskaras Kor\u0161unovas at the MO museum<\/i><\/span>). <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

Also, we did not forget about 700<\/i><\/span>th<\/sup><\/i><\/span> anniversary of Vilnius: 20 of those 700 years belong to \u201cSirenos\u201d as well. So, one of the programme\u2019s core motifs is dedicated to cultural and historical experiences of Lithuania\u2019s capital. We have also prepared a little <\/i><\/span>lost & found fragment: one day the caravan of \u201cSirenos\u201d will start moving towards the Baltic sea \u2013 it will make stops in various places on its way, offering peculiar artistic and emotional experiences.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

Life is a Dream \u00a9Dainius Putinas<\/p><\/div>\n

Even though the main focus while putting together the programme was a supposed foreign curator from a tasteful Center or Western European festival, I would still be glad if Lithuanian audience, who can attend all of those productions not only during the festival, would decide on following the trajectory of the curator\u2019s thought and participating in the events of the Lithuanian theatre showcase. Despite the fact that the prose of market laws and basic logistics has made slight changes to the poetry of the supposed concept, I am glad that this year\u2019s showcase breathes unique art \u2013 by reflecting on the past it summarizes the present and forces to think about the prospects of both near and far future\u201d.\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

Great New Body \u00a9Martynas Aleksa<\/p><\/div>\n

On September 20 Lithuanian theatre showcase will be opened by the production of the Youth Theatre called \u201cBarbarians\u201d<\/b> \u2013 the third production of the Hungarian director \u00c1rp\u00e1d Schilling in Lithuania. Before the performance audience will be invited to take part in a discussion about migration and afterwards \u2013 to a discussion of the performance in English.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the second day of the festival in the Arts Printing House we will watch \u201cLife is a Dream\u201d<\/b> by Gediminas Rimeika (production of \u201cArts and Science Lab\u201d). The same evening the audience will be invited to the Lithuanian National Drama Theatre to enjoy \u201cFossilia\u201d<\/b> by Egl\u0117 \u0160vedkauskait\u0117 (produced by LNDT). After the performance, the screening of \u201cOnce upon a Vilnius\u201d<\/b> by E. Do\u0161kus, accompanied by live music, performed by composers Vygintas Kisevi\u010dius and Paulius Kilbauskas, will take place.<\/span><\/p>\n

On September 22, after a morning discussion with the showcase curator, we will welcome guests at the MO museum exhibition \u201cVilnius poker<\/b>\u201d <\/span>(directed by Oskaras Kor\u0161unovas).<\/span> In the afternoon the \u201cGreat New Body\u201d<\/b> (<\/span>created by Arturas Bum\u0161teinas and \u017dygimantas Kudirka, produced by \u201cOperomanija\u201d<\/span>) will be shown at the Arts Printing House. A final touch to the evening will be given by \u201cMetamorphosis\u201d<\/b> by <\/span>Oliver Frlji\u0107 (produced by LNDT).<\/span> After the performance, \u201cSirenos\u201d festival opening and \u201cGarbanotas\u201d concert will take place at <\/span>Trak\u0173 Vok\u0117 manor.<\/span><\/p>\n

On September 23 the guests will take a bus out of Vilnius. The first stop will be Pravieni\u0161k\u0117s prison, where an unusual event will take place \u2013 performance \u201cGuided\u201d<\/b> (created by Rimantas Riba\u010diauskas and Mantas Jan\u010diauskas, produced by \u201cArtscape\u201d). Afterwards, guests will visit \u0160iauliai Drama Theatre and attend the performance \u201cFound Found Found\u201d<\/b> by Naubertas Jasinskas. On the way to \u0160iauliai a 1976 documentary \u201cLost Lost Lost\u201d<\/b> by Jonas Mekas, revealing the contexts of \u201cFound Found Found\u201d, will be shown on the bus. The last stop of this trip will be Klaip\u0117da Drama Theatre and the production \u201cFragment\u201d<\/b> by Dmitry Krymov.<\/span><\/p>\n

Guided <\/span>\u00a9Martynas Norvai\u0161as<\/p><\/div>\n

On the last day of the showcase in Vilnius the guests will be invited to two more performances. The \u201cChoice\u201d<\/b> by Gintar\u0117 Radvilavi\u010di\u016bt\u0117 will take place at Vilnius puppet theatre \u201cL\u0117l\u0117\u201d. Finally, the showcase will be closed by Laura Kutkait\u0117 \u201cSilence of the Sirens\u201d<\/b> at the Lithuanian National Drama Theatre.<\/span><\/p>\n
