NOT WHAT WE AGREED is an experiential audiovisual performance that brings together the Deaf community and professional performers from the hearing world. Music, video art, Deaf creativity in sign language and a unique aural experience meet here.
Original works created during the entire existence of the project will be presented on the stage of Arts Printing House: sign language poetry and song lyrics written in both Lithuanian Sign language and International Signs, as well as in spoken Lithuanian and English, accompanied by a live band with original music. The audience will be able to watch the works on a low-frequency platform that enhances the aural senses.
This performance is a proposal to take a fresh look at the meaning of language and to ask ourselves whether we really listen only with our ears.
Dominykas Vaitiekūnas, the artistic director and initiator of the project, who started his research on the Deaf community and music in 2020 and became familiar with the tradition of Deaf imitation song, invited the members of the community not only to imitate the songs already created by hearing people, but also to plunge into the extremely interesting world of creativity, which brings together the seemingly two opposing worlds: the world of sound and the world of silence, of Deaf and the hearing, of the perfect and the real, of the yours and the other.
All tickets for the premiere performance in November 2024 were sold out. The project’s initiator, musician and actor Dominykas Vaitiekūnas, received the Borisas Dauguvietis Earring award and the Ministry of Culture Prize for the best cultural education activities of 2024. Now this performance returns for one weekend only this year!
*ATTENTION! Strong low-frequency noise is used during the performance. People with pacemakers or other medical conditions are advised to make a health risk assessment.
